The majority of men wear very little color. I can appreciate this as I am more often than not wearing a black t-shirt and jeans. Even though I adopt this “uniform” for most of my daily wear I usually try to add an element of pop to freshen up my look. This addition of detail or color is what brings your look into the realm of style. Accessorize your look with bolder shoes, belts, watches or jewelry to personalize your image.
Most men are unable to pull off a pair of vibrant red pants or an interestingly patterned shirt. Often in a casual setting, the easiest way to add color is with a bold shoe. Dudes never tease other dudes for wearing a bold pair of sneakers. This is evident from the various colors of classic Converse or Vans. Maybe a safe start would be in the summer with a pair of shorts and then start to sneak a bold shoe in with jeans on a day to day basis. Once you are comfortable there you can really step up your shoe game with an impressive dress shoe or boot. I must warn you, like heroin and tattoos, shoes can be very addicting. Before you know it you have a shoe closet and are following a Japanese based Tumblr account on the latest sneaker collaborations.
If a bold shoe isn’t your thing, make sure that your other accessories reflect a sense of who you are. Watches are a classic way to finish your look. Casual looks paired with a bracelet or two (more than 2 and you are feeling super confident a la Johnny Depp). In the evening, a silver or gold watch adds a little bling to your look…maybe keep the bracelets to dress it down a bit. The truth is that with our fascination with phones, nobody really uses a watch to tell time anymore. It does provide you with proof you are a man and not a boy.
Always wear a belt…even if your pants fit. There are many different belts which make a statement and add polish to your outfit. They are a relatively inexpensive touch and it is way sexier when your girlfriend tries to take your pants off. Enough said.
Once you have the basics like shoes, watches and belts under control then you can add on all of your extras. Cool frames for your glasses or sunglasses, ties or bow ties, pocket squares, bracelets, suspenders and jewelry. Just be careful because style is a spectrum. You will likely want to lie somewhere between stylish and very stylish (there are events where you will want to pull out all of the stops and peacock)
Good luck and remember to start from the bottom and build it up!
